I’ve been watching a lot of Public Service Announcement videos on YouTube. Most of them are very well done and do a great job getting their message out there. However, the best ones are the videos that I can’t stop thinking about. They have affected me in a way that I have found myself acting differently towards people. The “end bullying” videos bring tears to my eyes as I listen to cases in which victims killed themselves because they were so hurt. Therefore, I have decided that I want to do my part in helping these victims. And it’s simpler than you think. All you have to do, is smile. Yes, it’s that easy. By giving someone a genuine smile in the hallway, or in class, you could make a big difference in a person’s day.
Look at it like this. Imagine you are having a terrible day. You missed your bus, failed a math test, dropped all of your books in the hallway… and it’s only lunchtime. You’re upset and frustrated. One more bad thing could be enough to send you over the edge into a break down. But, as you’re walking to your next class, somebody passing you in the hall and smiles in your direction. You glance around thinking their smiling at someone else, but then you realize. They were smiling at you. Suddenly, your anger seems to melt away, and your day doesn’t seem as bleak. You walk into your next class and ace the pop quiz and later you do amazing at track practice. That one smile made an entire difference in your day.
See how much affect a smile can have? It can even help a victim of bullying. They may be distraught and contemplate killing them self, when they see you smile at them. Then they feel like they are worth something and that they are a real human being. A smile is just one small step in ending hate and spreading goodness. It may not be the key to stopping bullying, but it can be the thing that changes someone’s day. So, why not give it a shot? After all, it’s just one more reason to smile!
